Sloane Rangers

Sloane Rangers
A term invented by the style commentator Peter York to describe a set of upper middle-class women based in moneyed areas of London such as Sloane Square and who were daughters of colonels, admirals and gentleman farmers. Also described as the horsey set or the Headscarf Brigade, the typical Sloane Ranger could be recognized by her safe, scrubbed appearance, traditionalist attitudes and ritualistic behaviour, which were catalogued in The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook in 1982. Dressed in a Hermes headscarf and pearls, the typical Sloane Ranger supposedly worked at top auction houses, merchant banks or Bond Street galleries before entering into marriage, which was their real career. Princess Diana was seen as a successful example of the type.
